These cookies are so fun and easy to make! They’re one of my favorite cookies to make during the holidays. I make them every year, they a family favorite to eat and they will be gone before you know it. They have a soft texture and taste is outstanding!

They make a great gift! And if you don’t feel like icing a cookie, just the plain cookie itself is great as a companion with morning or afternoon coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

Soft, melt-in-your-mouth Christmas holiday eggnog sugar cookies!

You can make them as larger, thicker cookies or many cute little plump ones using your smallest varietal seasonal cookie cutters.

I like to sift the dry icing ingredients for a smoother icing and the lemon juice will make them pretty and shiny. I also prefer to thin out the icing with eggnog and just dip the tops of the cookies straight into the bowl. Though icing cookies can be a fun activity in itself, these techniques make for a less overwhelming, quick to prepare, glaze-like top that is so much faster and easier than the traditional way to ice when compared to using knives or an icing spatula.

Eggnog Christmas Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter, unsalted, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon to vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons eggnog
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 2-3 cups confectioners’ sugar, to desired consistency, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 5-10 tablespoons eggnog, to desired consistency
  • Food coloring as desired

Eggnog Christmas Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (177 C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar.
  3. Mix in egg, then vanilla and eggnog.
  4. In a separate bowl mix remaining dry ingredients together.
  5. Fold wet and dry ingredients together.
  6. Dough will be soft, but refrigerating for 30-60 minutes will help with better handling and shaping.
  7. Roll cookies to about 1/2 inch thick into desired pattern using cookie cutter.
  8. Bake cookies on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees (177 C) for about 8-10 minutes, just until barely cooked.

Eggnog Christmas Cookies Icing

  1. Sift together dry icing ingredients.
  2. Add lemon juice, then eggnog to desired consistency.
  3. Divide icing into portions/color as desired.

Assembly

  1. Ice cookies by dipping tops straight into icing, let excess drip off, and place on waxed paper, decorate, and let dry overnight.
