It’s day 13 of Bloganuary!
This post is my response to the question “Think back on your most memorable road trip.” A list of the writing challenges can be found here.
I love road trips. Traveling around and exploring. Choosing from a more structured list of things to do and places to see, while leaving enough time for spontaneous stops and events, along with plenty of relaxation.
Thinking back to the many road trips I’ve been on, one in particular stands out to me. A road trip with my family around Maui, Hawaii.
We got to see and do everything.
The Hana Highway is an adventure all in itself.
Dense Trees
Vibrant foliage
Glorious Waterfalls
Serene landscape
The windy, narrow road.
Where you have to slow down to a careful, steady crawl.
Passersby honking their horns to alert incomers that they are approaching the sharp, blind turns.
One-lane bridges.
The shops sell bumper stickers saying “I survived the Road to Hana.”
It’s that intense.
The volcanic landscape next to the restless shore. Beautiful flora and fauna that’s found nowhere else on Earth. A helicopter ride was an amazing way to experience it.
Home to whales, dolphins, and the Hawaiian Monk Seal.
Tropical Fish
Snorkeling amongst the Longnose Butterfly Fish
Whale Watching
Migrating all the way to Auʻau Channel from Alaska
Scouting for all the types of sea turtles, seabirds, and forest birds.
We visited a farm growing sweet, succulent pineapple.
Maui Gold Pineapple
Hand harvested and shipped to your door!
Traditional Pig Roast
Tender pulls of pork, complete with hand-pounded poi, made from the purple Taro root
Hula Dance at Sunset Dinner
Ukulele music, the soft, rhythmic dance, even the moon showed up
How about we go another hula dance at sunset dinner?
Feast of Lele
Musical and dance accompanies a multi-course culinary journey to Hawai`i, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tahiti (French Polynesia), and Samoa (Polynesian island).

A complete tour
Setting Sail
Sailing and watching the weather turn. Clouds that settle over the island of Maui. Sipping a yummy cocktail. My favorite is the strawberry lava flow piña colada. It’s a twist on the classic, drenched in strawberry sauce. I always find it fun to hear the differing tracks of music played on adventure tour sailing vessels. From traditional Hawaiian to the iconic, let’s set sail to the energetic song of Sweet Caroline, followed by a medley of The Beach Boys and Bob Marley.
I have visited Maui a few times now, and the fondness of our family road trip is memorable. Very close to my heart. Having visited before the Lahaina fire and experiencing the rich livelihood and culture as it once was, is very special. Such kind, sentimental people who continue to rebuild, share, and celebrate all the rich heritage they have to offer.
On this particular road trip, my family and I had a lovely time. Always makes me smile when I think about it.
I could post photos all day. The hiking, zipline, surfing, Maui Ocean Center, farmer’s markets, shops, scenic nature sites, restaurants, and cafés. The infamous Lahaina Banyan tree.
With that, I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into my most memorable road trip!

Erica those photos are amazing. Hawaii is on our list to visit for sure, I hear only good things from friends and family who have spent time there.
